5 shows to binge on Netflix this weekend… or maybe THIS month.

Hello fellow bingers! I hope you’re having a lovely weekend, I’ve returned with a list of things you can maybe check out on Netflix! Some are objectively great, like they’re well made, great acting, amazing cinematography but some are just unique or just things I have good memories of, as opposed to some sort of objective perfect list. But take a look and drop me a comment if you like any of them! But also comment if you hate them lol.

1. The 100

Hello dystopia! The 100 is set in space, in a future where a few thousand humans seek refuge from a world-ending nuclear holocaust, and over the course of about a century, have become a fully fledged civilization. But now that it seems like the earth has rebounded, and appears to be full of lush vegetation and crystal blue waters, an eden in comparison to the cold metal and rationed food they’ve survived on in their Ark, they’re considering colonizing it. But, if it’s one thing history has taught is that colonization is never easy so naturally chaos ensues! Glorious chaos. I enjoyed the politics of this show and how they were able to bring alive concepts I’ve read about in human rights and justice and made me question how I would actually respond in that situation. For example, would you maintain the moral high ground in the face of death or would your survival instincts kick in and cause you to “rage against the dying of the light”? How do you practice restorative justice and reconciliation in high pressure situations where losses have been incurred on both sides and people want vengeance? This show will frustrate you but it’s not a bad exercise for the brain.

2. Sense 8

Whatever Sense 8 is made of, I want to shoot it into my veins. It is just downright beautiful. A product of the Wachowski siblings, Sense 8 explores the lives, loves and struggles of a group of people who are diverse in almost every possible way, but who are connected on a very very deep level. That’s about all I can say without spoiling it for you but just watch it and revel in the sex and violence, love and friendship, betrayal and disappointment, self awareness and emotional growth that will unfurl before your very eyes.

3. The Good Place

The Good Place is a crowd favourite. I mean, mashup philosophy, Kristen Bell and the afterlife and what do you expect other than hilarious hi-jinks? The great thing about the Good Place is you’ll learn so much without it ever feeling like learning. Plus, Jason is the best, and Chidi is the hottest nerd. and you’ll love to hate Tahani, and Janet is perfection.

4. Sex Education

One word to describe Sex Education? AWKWARD! But in the best way. Otis is a self absorbed annoying relatively wealthy white boy who has little to no problems so he invents them. Okay, that was harsh. But Otis was uninspiring as a lead character, unlike his best friend Eric, played by Ncuti Gatwa who is EVERYTHING. HELLOOOOOOO! NETFLIX!!!!! CAST THE MAN!!!! IN EVERYTHING!!!!! Sorry, I love him. This show will get on your nerves because Eric deserved better at every turn, but still, it’s funny to relive the wild things teenagers get into. And it’s worth it for the actually great sex education being doled out by the actual sex therapist character in the show, the great presentations of mental health support and friendship and the unique way the series gets into the individual circumstances of each character.

5. Derry Girls

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to come of age in Northern Ireland in the 90’s? Well watch Derry Girls and find out! I loved this show. I loved the music, the fashion, the hijinks, the politics, the culture. It was just a really unique story, with irreverent girls, figuring out life, dealing with their family drama, trying to be more popular, but also being smart and talented and mature for their age. Come for the silliness, stay for the depth of the storytelling.
